CareLineLive’s Development Director on cybersecurity
In 2025 security is more important than ever. Every day there’s a new headline about an institution experiencing a cyber security incident, or a new malicious actor on the scene whose trying to profit from the misfortune of others. The health and care sector is particularly vulnerable and has been targeted in recent years.
As we’re dealing with highly sensitive data, security is a top priority for us. I’m proud to say that we’ve never been subject to a security incident thanks to the protections and mitigations that we have in place.
Security audits and automated vulnerability scanning
Saying we’re secure is one thing, but we’ve got to put our money where our mouth is. We go through a number of audits each year to make sure our protections are still working and we’re keeping up with any emerging threats.
A core part of this is automated vulnerability scanning. We utilise a service that performs regular automated checks against our systems. Essentially they’ll be trying to break into our systems using nearly 200,000 known techniques. As new techniques emerge, a scan is expedited to ensure that we’re notified as soon as possible if we’re vulnerable.
We also employ supply chain scanning. As CareLineLive is a product that utilises a lot of open source packages, we need to have confidence that any third-party code is also secure.
Penetration testing
Periodic penetration tests consist of a cyber security expert attempting to find existing or potential issues. We’ve committed to yearly penetration tests at a minimum, but will commission additional tests for changes that we feel are in a particularly sensitive area of the system.
Following our most recent penetration test, the consultant said it’s quite rare to come across a system that doesn’t end up with either a “high” or “medium” severity issue reported. It’s a testament to the fact that building software is actually really hard, but also a bit of an ego boost for the team knowing that the effort we’re putting in is having tangible results.
